If you’re around 30–35 and have one or two kids, 15% to 25% of your income being invested can be a good number.

If it is below 15%, revisit your expenses. Sometimes, when you revisit your expenses, you may realise that the biggest problem is the EMI, where you may not be able to take any immediate action.

The important thing is that this percentage should keep increasing with age. By the time the kids become independent, education goals are done and EMIs are over, savings can move towards 45%–50%.

“At the age of 35 your savings should be at least around 15%. And by the time you reach 55, you should be able to save around 50%.”
