I am 36yr old with about 14yr of work experience.

I make a good salary but feel completely exhausted by the corporate grind.

I am tempted to take a career break or step down to a lower paying side hustle.

I have young kids and aging parents so I am torn on what to do next.

The decade between 35 and 45 is a critical sweet spot in your life. By this age you have roughly 15yr of work experience and a stable career trajectory. You also have young children and aging parents who need your attention.

Taking a career break in the west is normalized but in India it is often frowned upon and can diminish your social capital. Instead of a break you should double down on your primary career and get that right. Reap the financial and professional benefits of the foundation you have built over the last decade.

At the same time you must bond with your children now. The relationship built before they become teenagers dictates the rest of their lives. Failing to build this bond can make parenting a lifelong emotionally draining affair.

You also need to prioritize your aging parents because health declines rapidly. Spend time with them now to avoid the universal guilt of neglecting them in their final years.

Finally utilize your own health while you have the money time and mobility. Do not wait until you are 60 to pursue physical passions like trekking as your body may no longer support it.
