Paid Rs 1.5L/yr for 3yr in a traditional life insurance plan. Should I surrender and take the loss?
Published 2 October 2026
I just realized the life cover is only Rs 15L and the returns are extremely poor.
The surrender value right now is terrible and I will lose a lot of money.
Is it better to stop paying and take the hit or continue since I am already 3yr in?
When you look at the industry data, payouts for surrendered, withdrawn or discontinued policies make up around 40% of total payouts. This results in massive wealth destruction for consumers who receive measly surrender values.
We have a cultural hangover from the days when LIC was set up to build a habit of savings. Culturally we got wired to think of insurance as a savings product where we expect something back. But you need to separate your investments from your insurance entirely.
To make the decision easier, map out Option A versus Option B on paper. Show yourself exactly where you will be 5yr from now if you abandon the money you have lost today and reinvest the Rs 1.5L annually into a good mutual fund. Compare that to continuing to lock your money into a product that barely beats inflation and offers negligible life cover.
The numbers will automatically show you that walking away is the right financial choice.
