Scrambling for tax proofs every July: How do I organize my documents for a Rs 1.5L HRA claim?

Every year I spend days in July frantically searching for rent receipts and investment proofs to send to my company.

I claim about Rs 1.5L in HRA and have standard 80C investments but I always leave it to the last minute.

This annual exercise causes me a massive amount of stress.

What is a practical system to manage tax compliance throughout the year without it feeling like a burden?

Tax planning should never start in July but must begin at the very start of the financial year. The most common mistake taxpayers make year after year is failing to manage their taxes throughout the year and attempting to comprehend everything on a single day just before the deadline.

At the beginning of the year companies ask for investment declarations to deduct TDS. Do not make random declarations but rather understand exactly what you are committing to and plan your investments accordingly. You need to maintain proper documentation especially if you claim allowances like HRA.

Ensure you have genuine rent agreements and rent receipts because the tax department requires perfect documentation to verify these transactions. The easiest organizational hack is to create a simple tax folder like "ITR 2025" on Google Drive. Throughout the year simply upload every relevant financial document, invoice, or ticket into this folder as soon as you get it.

When tax season arrives you can just share access to this folder with your CA. This completely eliminates the last-minute scramble for paperwork and transforms a stressful obligation into a manageable routine.

You also need to track all your income sources throughout the year including savings account interest, FD interest, and dividends. The Income Tax Department often has this information already and failing to report it can lead to unnecessary notices.
