Friend is gifting me Rs 75k for my wedding. Will I have to pay tax on the extra Rs 25k or the whole amount?

I am getting married next month and a close family friend (not a blood relative) wants to gift me Rs 75k via bank transfer.

I know there is a Rs 50k tax-free limit for gifts from non-relatives.

Does that mean I only pay tax on the Rs 25k above the limit, or does the whole Rs 75k become taxable? I fall in the 30% slab.

The moment your gift amount from non-relatives crosses the Rs 50k threshold in a single financial year, the entire sum becomes taxable. You do not get to deduct the first Rs 50k and only pay tax on the remaining Rs 25k. Under Section 56(2)(x) of the Income Tax Act, the Rs 50k limit is an exemption threshold, not a standard deduction.

Since your friend is gifting you Rs 75k and does not fall under the strict legal definition of a relative, the full Rs 75k will be added to your income. Because you are in the 30% tax bracket, this means you will end up paying tax on that entire Rs 75k at your slab rate.

The tax rules are very specific about who counts as a relative. It includes spouses, siblings, ancestors, descendants, and parents-in-law. Gifts from these specified relatives are completely tax-free regardless of the amount.

But for anyone outside that exact list, you need to track the total amount received across the year. If multiple friends give you Rs 20k each and the total crosses Rs 50k, the entire combined amount becomes taxable.
