Planning to FIRE at 45 with Rs 1.2 Lakhs monthly expense: Is a Rs 4 Cr corpus enough?

Published 28 September 2026

I am 38 and planning to retire by 45.

My current monthly expenses are about Rs 1.2 Lakhs.

I want to know if a corpus of Rs 4 Crores will be enough to sustain me.

I plan to travel more and pursue hobbies once I quit my 9-to-5.

How should I calculate my baseline and factor in these extra costs?

A baseline corpus of 30 times your annual expenses is the minimum requirement for financial independence if you are under 50. With monthly expenses of Rs 1.2 Lakhs, your yearly spend is about Rs 14.4 Lakhs. Multiplying that by 30 gives you a baseline target of roughly Rs 4.3 Crores today but since you plan to retire 7 years later, assuming 6-7% inflation the actual corpus then needs to be Rs 6-7cr.

This number needs to be adjusted upward for future inflation by the time you actually hit 45. A common myth about early retirement is that your expenses will drop once you stop working.

In reality, leaving a 9-to-5 job gives you a lot more free time to travel, socialize and pursue hobbies. All of these activities cost money and usually lead to an elevated lifestyle rather than a diminished one.

You also need to separate your retirement corpus from other major life goals. Retirement is just one bucket in your overall financial plan. You must separately account for children's education, marriages and a dedicated travel kitty.

To reach this goal, you need to aggressively step-up your savings rate since you are starting a bit later in your 30s. You need to calculate your exact SIP amount to reach the corpus of Rs 6-7cr you need. The secret engine here is the step-up SIP where you increase your investment amount by 10% every single year as your income grows.
