Have Rs 15L lump sum. Are midcap funds too expensive to enter right now?

I am 34yr old and just received an annual bonus of about Rs 15L.

I want to allocate this to my equity portfolio for a 10yr horizon.

Midcap funds have given crazy returns over the last 18 months but everyone says valuations are too high right now.

Should I wait for a market crash to invest this Rs 15L or just put it in a large cap fund instead?

Midcap valuations are indeed elevated right now so you should strictly avoid lump sum investments and use a SIP instead.

The midcap category has performed exceptionally well over the last 36 months. This massive run-up has naturally pushed valuations to elevated levels across the board. However this outperformance isn't just hot air because it has been driven by genuinely superior earnings growth.

Midcap companies are showing a very robust growth profile that justifies a lot of this investor interest. But midcap funds are inherently volatile. Stocks in this segment can become expensive very quickly and they can correct just as fast based on sudden market triggers.

Because of this inherent volatility and current high valuations, making a large Rs 15L lump sum allocation right now carries significant timing risk. Instead of waiting on the sidelines for a crash that might take years, the smartest approach is to take the systematic investment route. Set up an STP or SIP to deploy this Rs 15L over the next 12 to 18 months.

This allows you to average out your purchase costs and manage the segment-specific risks effectively. The earnings growth trajectory for midcaps remains strong for the long term. The compounding effect of this earnings growth will continue to drive wealth creation over your 10yr horizon.
