How to properly bucket my investments for a 3yr goal vs a 10yr goal?

I am 29 and saving for two main goals.

I need about Rs 20L for a house down payment in 3yr and I am also building a retirement corpus for 20yr away.

How should I split my asset allocation?

I also want to know how much emergency fund is actually enough.

You should never invest in equity for a short-term goal. Write down your goals and tag them by time horizon. For ultra short-term or short-term goals like 3 months to 3yr you may allocate these funds to debt instruments.

For long-term goals of 7yr to 10yr or more you may allocate these funds to equity to benefit from compounding. Match your SIPs and portfolio allocations directly to these tagged goals. Planning for maximum risk is the most critical yet most ignored step in financial planning.

You must write down your worst-case scenarios starting with job loss. If you lose your income today you need to know exactly how many months you can survive on your current liquid savings. Next you must plan for medical emergencies.

Find out the cost of a private room in a premium hospital near you. Multiply that daily rate by 30 days and then double it to account for treatments and medications. You need to check if you have adequate health insurance to cover this exact amount.

If you do not have the necessary liquidity or insurance cover that is completely fine for now. It simply becomes your new short-term financial target. If you play the investing game long enough the upside takes care of itself.

Compounding and market rallies may eventually make you money. But if you fail to prepare for downside risks a single catastrophic event can wipe out your portfolio before you ever get to see that upside.
