Does a Rs 6k room rent cap in health insurance really matter if I just pay the difference?

I am looking to buy health insurance and comparing a few policies.

One cheaper policy has a room rent cap of Rs 6k per day.

If I get admitted and choose a private room that costs Rs 10k per day, I assume I just have to pay the Rs 4k difference out of pocket.

Is my understanding correct or is there a hidden catch?

Assuming you only pay the difference for a more expensive hospital room is incorrect and can lead to devastating out-of-pocket expenses. Because of a clause called proportionate deduction, the insurer links the room rent limit to the entire hospital bill.

Since your Rs 6k cap covers only 60% of the Rs 10k room, the insurer will only cover 60% of your entire medical bill. This includes doctor fees, nursing charges, and diagnostics. You will be forced to pay the remaining 40% of the total hospital bill yourself.

Always buy a comprehensive health insurance policy with no room rent capping. You also need to watch out for waiting periods for specific ailments, particularly lifestyle diseases. Treatments related to hypertension often have a waiting period of up to 2yr.

If you buy a policy today you are not covered for these specific risks until the waiting period expires. Buying health insurance early while you are young and healthy is the best way to bypass these restrictions.

Ultimately the healthcare system is actually a sick care system. The most profound financial investment you can make is in your actual physical health today.
